If you are new here, hi, my name is Jess, I am the owner of operator of Green Mountain Space Professional Organizing firm located in Western North Carolina. My team and I help busy professionals, families, and people who are going through life changes take control of their spaces and help them get organized. We understand your life is busy and you want to spend your time doing the things you love and not feel like your stuck on a Saturday organizing your entire home. Our core values are routed in intentions. Intentions with your time, your space, your home, your future, your education, your peace, and your happiness all stem from living an organized life. Although we do believe making spaces beautiful are easier to maintain, we know that no one stays organized all of the time. Let’s be real. Life is forever changing and new things enter your home ALL OF THE TIME. When you are intentionally organized the easier it is to create time to create more space and let things go.

Closet organizing is one of our most requested sessions.

We all go through phases, style changes, body changes, and job changes. If you are here reading this then you are already ahead of the game! We are going to walk you through steps on How to get started when organizing your Closet.

  1. Find your inspiration! We believe in having a reference to look back at when organizing feels overwhelming. Go get on the Google and make a photo album in your phone or make a Pinterest board of your #closetgoals. Keep this handy when you are feeling tired.

  2. Download and fill out the closet decluttering and organizing checklist here. Bonus if you laminate it so you can reuse it for the next season.

  3. Decide when you have 30-45 minutes of uninterrupted time to devote to the task.

  4. Clear off a space in your room, like your bed, and pull everything out (i.e. all pants and shoes) and start trying everything on. (refer to checklist)

Set yourself up for success. If you have trouble completing tasks on your home, plan a phone call with a trusted friend who will give you their honest feedback about your choices. Grab a snack and your favorite beverage before you begin. Trust us, no one can organize or make decisions when they are hungry. Refer back to your checklist when you feel you are having a hard time making a decision. Set your timer and GO FOR IT!!

Start with the two smaller categories. When our team of professional organizers are helping a client we typically start with shoes and pants because it takes the longest to try on and it gets the hard part out of the way. When you are looking at the volume of items in your category, make sure you can get through it in your selected time frame. If you get distracted its likely you will not finish. Once you have completed one category, hit the repeat button and move on to the next.

Now you know what to do, let’s talk about what not to do when you are organizing.

  1. Don’t buy organizing products before you declutter and see what you have left. We see this far too often where people go out and buy things and then get frustrated because it’s too much or not enough and it slows down the process.

  2. Don’t be so hard on yourself you give up before you start.

  3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, remember to phone your honest fashionista friend who will tell you the truth your choices, or consider hiring a professional.

  4. Don’t forget to celebrate your wins!! Organizing on your own can be a challenge. Plan a way to treat yourself when you are finished organizing.

At Green Mountain Space, when a new year or seasons change we see the overwhelming amount of content around goal setting, and decluttering your home in a 30 days, 60 days or 90 days. We challenge our readers and our clients to focus on one or two spaces per month rather than the big picture. Focusing on one space at time reduces the stress and anxiety that might come with organizing your entire home. As we mentioned before, in other words, simplicity is key. Keep it simple and intentional in your organizing goals and you will have instant results.

We love to see your progress and we want to celebrate with you. Whether you are celebrating or need extra motivation or inspiration we want to know how you are doing! Tag us @greenmountainspace and include the hashtag #organizingwithintention or email us at hello@greenmountainspace.com.
