Some may see this as excessive but as a professional organizing firm who helps clients with their unpacking and packing needs, it’s better to start early than to scramble at the last minute. Our team of organizers have more than 25 years of moving experience. More than half of the team have moved across multiple states to end up in Western North Carolina and as the owner of Green Mountain Space Professional Organizing, I personally have moved 14 times in a 12 year span.
In 2022, our team assisted more than 15 families with their moving needs from decluttering, packing, unpacking, itemizing, contacting moving companies, scheduling appointments with home vendors, and brought our handyman in to our moving jobs to assist with installations, repairs.
If you are moving in near future and you are reading this article, you are already ahead of the game. We are going to let you in on our secrets to a success streamlined move.
Follow these steps.
1. Look at the chart above and select your size home. If you are past your start date that is ok. You can do this in a shorter amount of time. It will be more condensed and you will have longer working days.
2. Start a binder, or notebook, including a calendar, to notate important dates and corral important papers.
3. Set your target move date. You will be working backwards.
4. Brain DUMP!! Make the following lists.
a. List any repairs you need to complete for your home
b. Write out Employment tasks and deadlines
c. Write Rooms/Spaces to Declutter
d. Document Events scheduled prior to your move date
e. Write out 5-8 ways to treat yourself/relax during the moving process
f. Start a Contact page for vendors for your CURRENT home and your NEW home
g. Identify your person who you will talk to when you are stressed and feeling unmotivated, ask them to be your support system
Now that you have your brain dump list, you are going to work on scheduling. Whether you are a busy professional, entrepreneur, stay-at-home parent (yes, SAHM and SAHD is a full time job) retiring, or moving in with your partner or spouse you have to schedule protected time to do all of these tasks to prepare yourself for your move.
Put it on your calendar
Contact repairs vendor early on. Put it on your calendar when you will make calls. We know it takes time but things won’t fix themselves. Service Providers are busy, well always, especially in this booming real estate market.
Declutter your home! It costs less to move less! Set 3-5 hours aside a week to declutter each of your spaces. Three to five hours may seem like a lot. But that is what it typically takes. You can breathe a little easier when we tell you we are including drop off times to donation centers.
PRO TIP on where to start decluttering and organizing! The GARAGE! The more you remove from your garage space, as you begin to pack and stage your home, you can pack and be done with it.
Schedule time to say goodbye to your friends and family and time to relax.
If you are feeling really overwhelmed our team always recommends to reference back to your CARE LIST and do something immediately for yourself. Our favorite de-stressed is to go outside and take a 15 minute walk to clear the mind.
